Basically, if you stray from his teachings/interpretations (hadeeth) you stray from the Quran. His interpretations are the only valid ones period.

That actually isn't what your prophet's job was. If you read your Quran and ask your own scholars, his job was not only to reveal the words of God but to show you how to interpret and follow them. Otherwise the Quran would have simply been revealed all at once, and there would have been no need for a prophet.
