INTELLIGENCE was the third newsletter to appear that offered coverage of developments in AI (artificial intelligence) and the first to provide regular coverage of neural networks and neurocomputing. Reporting on neural nets and other self-organizing systems, like robotics, started in the very first issue. Nanotechnology coverage began in the mid 1980s and a NANO column was initiated in 1992, which included coverage of nanocomputing developments. The following year, coverage of the net was given a monthly column.

In the summer of 1983, when I was formulating the plan for the newsletter, several advisors and friends urged me to call it "Artificial Intelligence," to take advantage of the then current interest in AI. In addition, I was cautioned and warned, if I persisted in calling the newsletter "INTELLIGENCE," it would be mistaken for being about spycraft and stealth political operations. I decided to follow my original inspiring thought, about how the future of computing would see the field continue to strive toward integrating intelligence into computing and communications. There has been no confusion. In addition, all the major US intelligence agencies, as well as others from Europe, Africa and Asia, have subscribed to INTELLIGENCE over the years, as have people in business and finance, government, education, and organizations.

Pamela McCorduck is the author of a number of books concerning the history and philosophical significance of artificial intelligence, the future of engineering and the role of women and technology. She is also the author of three novels. She is a contributor to Omni, New York Times, Daedalus, the Michigan Quarterly Review and is a contributing editor of Wired. She is a former vice president of the PEN American Center.
