  • In 1963 or '64, I met him when I was 17 or 18 in San Angelo, TX where he like to spend several months out of the year. He was tall, graceful, handsome, charming, self-deprecating and funny with a little pencil mustache that was so popular when he was a young man.

  • I spoke to his grand-daughter in the 1980s. She was living in Vancouver, Washington. She was 16 when he died in 1969.

She recalls him as very kind and charming capable of speaking French and Spanish in addition to English. She recalled travelling with him in taxis in San Francisco and using his languages with the cab drivers.

By all accounts he was pretty much in real life like he was in his films. He was a handsome and talented sophisticated gentleman.
