Jay unveils the makeover of the Nebraska State Fair logo and announces the "winner" of next month's makeover. The before and after: http://goodbadandugly.tv/ugly/makeovers/entry/nebraska-state-fair-logo-makeover/

-------------

Hello, I'm Jay Wilkinson and this is Good Bad and Ugly tv where we share street-smart marketing stories.

Welcome to the September 2010 makeover episode, where we will unveil a brand new and desperately needed logo for the Nebraska State Fair.

But first, I'm proud to announce the recipient of next month's makeover. Narrowly beating out a schizophrenic newspaper ad and a website so plain you'd think it was printed on construction paper, the big winner is this Big Bus Promotions postcard hailing from Loretto, Minnesota.

I'm not sure what deserves the most ridicule... the fact that every single word is written in ALL CAPS, that five different fonts were used or that no quantifiable benefits or even a call to action were included. On the bright side, there's no shortage of opportunities for improvement.

Now, on to this month's makeover and a little background. Until this year, the Nebraska State Fair was located in Lincoln, the state capital, and they had a perfectly fine logo, as seen here.

Then the decision was made to move the Fair to Grand Island, a smaller and more centrally located city that not an island and, well -- if I'm being honest -- NOT so grand. Wanting to put their own stamp on the event, they decided that a new logo was in order. After a few months of work, and lot's of anticipation... they somehow gave birth to this troubling monstrosity.

Since its unveiling to the public, this graphic crime has been thoroughly ridiculed on Facebook and further pummeled by members of the GBU community.

User Keyboard Cat lamented "Ugh... this logo is terrible. It's chock full of gradients and line drawings and is not functional for any application less than six inches wide."

Jamish observed, "I like how they couldn't be bothered to make the ferris wheel circles concentric. The ferris wheel legs are also lopsided."

Eye Candy simply remarked, "I just threw up a little in my mouth."

While Creative Shower offered the following congratulations: "Great work Grand Island Elementary on your annual logo contest."

Clearly, this pile o' pixels was in dire need of some serious help. Let's take a look at the makeover that Firespring has graciously provided.

Not only is this logo an exponential leap forward, it presents an image that the State Fair and Nebraska residents can actually be proud of... which is far better than having to shield their eyes and hang the right side of their brain in shame.

Now it's up to the Nebraska State Fair to decide whether they want a visually pleasing logo, or one that continues to violate every design principle known to man. Should they choose to go with the new logo designed by our makeover sponsor, Firespring -- we'll provide them with all the artwork, in full resolution, free of charge. Good luck in making your decision, guys.
