Perhaps homing devices were in the towers and the planes homed in on the devices. Much like a smart bomb homes in on a laser signature. A sure hit since the plane would automatically fly into the device. Once the plane and the device were within a set distance from one another (say 3 meters) the device would self destruct,hence the flash seen a split second before impact.

It looks like the men died from the "tests" while Einstein was laughing. He didn't look to be against using tech as weapons in those films he's in.
