Seeing Figaro and the "Countess" expressing undying love for one another, the Count calls for swords and reinforcements. The various couples are summoned from the arbour to bear witness to his wife's flagrant infidelity. They beg him to forgive her, but he is adamant - unti the real Countess's voice is heard asking that all be pardoned. The COunt kneels to beg forgiveness, which the Countess grants with a grace that is as touching as it is undemonstrative. The opera ends with a general call for feasting and fireworks at the close of a day of "torments, caprice and folly".
