Well, with this part of the documentary I mostly disagree. Moving aside some outrageous examples that you've put, and should of certainly not been done. I rather like the karaokes that fansubs make with effects, because, in the majority of cases I don't like the animation of the opening, but rather enjoy the song with some background (Better if it's moving). And, if they want to be recognized by their work let them be, they're doing it for free. Doesn't bother. However everyone has diff. tastes

you addressed the biggest pet peeve of mine since I started watching fansubs, fansubbers branding their own names on it. Seriously I doubt they payed a couple thousand yen to make these episodes.

I agree with most of your points but, the fact that foreign viewers need to read subtitles makes it impossible to duplicate the same experience the japanese viewers had. Subtitles are obtrusive, even the plainest ones.

I agree with all of this. I hope fansubers watch this and learn.

I disagree with the signs translation. The one book was horrible- but the rest----where the Police station title is under the Japanese seems alright. I mean where else would you put it? On the side? Not at all? How do I know what the building is called?

I like karoke subs.and there are some that are annoying. And what about the groups who actually translate the credits for real?

Another thing- where you talk about getting the orginal experience. I'm not going to get that..I don't speak Japanese. So the subs themselves already ruin it. Sign translations as well...but how would I understand?

To be honest, in-line translation of words is a lot less intrusive than putting "book: How To Subtitle Anime"

Doesn't "moe" jut mean "fetish"? Holy shit that was hard.

If that doesn't work in every given situation, you work around it. Every word doesn't need a 1:1 equivalent in every single language to avoid being labeled "untranslatable".

I can't be arsed to come up with a decent translation for "ahoge", but putting it as, say, "idiot-hair" is a hell of lot better than just leaving the word in Japanese.
