  • I wish I had an occasion to see him live, alive. It seems he was the kind of man who made you wanna learn to play the drums, and at the same time, who made you persuaded that it was a ludicrous idea. Know what I mean?

At 01:37 and 02:19 Dave Carpenter gives a huge slap in the face of any slap bass player. It's unbelievable.

  • @oliverecords I know what you mean!!! Thanks!:)

  • I was there visiting Disneyland for the first time one evening during that period when the stage rose up from the ground, and there was the band with Buddy Rich. Good lord. This recording does no justice to the dynamics of that performance. It was one of the grandest live performances I've ever witnessed, and Buddy was in top form that night. The audience was simply mesmerized. We couldn't applaud them enough. Thanks guys for one of the great memories of my life. And, thanks for the post!

  • @jcook56050 I completely understand! I only got to see Buddy and the band once and I'll never forget it. Thanks for commenting!! Steve :)

  • I get so tired of the rhythm being played in most of todays music on the hi-hat cymbals. Buddy shows that you can play rock and funk type music on the ride cymbal where it should be played at least in my opinion. There is a place for hi-hat ride rhythm but it is way overdone most of the time.

  • @stevebul I couldn't agree more!!! Thanks :)

  • @stevebul let me disaggree. to me it's not connected with genre but depends on instrumentation. usually today, you hear funk played by smaller ensembles. when you'd play dense beat with typical ride you'd take all the space of any piece. in big band situation the proportions are more "fair" and you can be sure that horns will cut through everything in accompaniment. although i could imagine playing usual funk band funk on some dry ride (short sound with little "wash") so i wonder... ;)

  • Even up in age, BUDDY COULD PLAY!!!

  • Steve Marcus was a great sax player. That solo has parts in it from his solo in "Foreplay" the 1972 Larry Coryell song.

  • Was this the opening tune to Monday Night Football ??
