Composed by Kevin Dean

Kevin Dean - Trumpet
Al Mclean - Saxophone
Mike Rud - Guitar
Dave Watts - Bass

The last in a suite of four short films, 'Pops' is a moving visual and sonic Eulogy to the father of Jazz trumpeter Kevin Dean. Rich Dean was an Iowa farmer, who prized education, music and the arts as much or more as agriculture.

Noted hard-bop trumpeter Kevin Dean thumbs through photos, and remembers the farm house jam sessions that shaped his ideas about Jazz. Rich Dean passed not long after his son penned this ballad for him, and Kevin Dean remembers playing through the tune with his father on their last visit.

'Pops' was filmed in an early 20th Century Montreal church with perhaps the finest acoustics in the city. The Neo-Gothic ambiance inside the building soaks into the music here, with moody, nuanced performances on the Dean original.

Kevin Dean is professor, and a founding faculty member of the Jazz program at McGill University's Schulich School of Music (http://www.mcgill.ca/music/).

  • Thank you for your thoughts. Kevin's playing a standard Bach Stradivarius on this recording.

  • My Father played, my grandfather played, and my great grandfather and uncle also played. I understand what this is trying to say, and it is "spoken" beautifully. It's a lovely piece. Out of curiosity, what horn is Kevin playing? It looks like the tuning slide is going into the third valve on the left side of the horn. I've seen a few conns like that and a beuscher.

  • Wonderful song for a wonderful man.

  • Thanks for this fantastic tribute to "Pops". He was a great musician, husband, & Dad who we all miss dearly. Mark

  • Beautiful, beautiful tribute and song.

  • Lovely!

  • Gorgeous!

Awesome that you could do that with your dad.

What are the horns you are playing?

  • God, I miss that man! Beautiful tune - I wish I could have heard Bob play it. Thanks for putting this together, Kevin.
