See Angela Bauer, an orthotist at Scheck & Siress, refine a helmet to encourage growth in a part of an infant's head. The child has plagiocephaly, a skull deformity that results in a flattened head.

This condition can develop as a result of continuous pressure on an infants skull over time. A baby's soft skull plates can become deformed from continuous pressure on surfaces that the baby's head rests against, including beds and infant carriers.

It is best to treat the condition between four to nine months of age because this is a period of rapid growth of the skull. Fitting helmets after the 12-month mark requires longer treatment periods, as the head is growing at a much slower rate.
