The Black Templars are a Second Founding chapter derived from the Imperial Fists and their primarch, Rogal Dorn. Since that time, the Black Templars have been on the greatest and longest crusade the Imperium has ever known to prove their loyalty to the Emperor.

History
During Horus' attack on the Emperor's Palace, Rogal Dorn chose Sigismund as the Emperor's Champion, and Sigismund was given the best armour and weapons. He went forward to challenge the traitorous leaders in single combat, and triumphed over all he met in battle. After the Horus Heresy, the breakdown of the Imperial Fists into Codex chapters was demanded by Roboute Guilliman. Dorn thought him a coward for not being there with the Ultramarines to help in the defence of Terra. Guilliman in his turn thought a rebel of Dorn for not adhering to the new Codex Astartes.

Neither would give in. Leman Russ, primarch of the Space Wolves, and Vulkan, primarch of the Salamanders both agreed with Dorn, they also did not want their Legions split up and spread across the galaxy. Raven Guard primarch Corax and Jaghatai Khan of the White Scars supported the Ultramarines. Again a civil war was looming on the horizon.

The Imperial Fists were persecuted for their so called heresies and even fired upon by the Imperial Navy. When it looked almost inevitable that civil war would be fought, Dorn finally relented and agreed to split his legion in chapters as dictated by the Codex Astartes. The Imperial Fists were split up and the Crimson Fists and the Black Templars chapters were created.

I don't even play Templars, but they are by far the most metal of all 40k armies. Stop the great crusade? Fuck that! We won't stop until the only race left in the entire galaxy is us.

I know your description is accurate, fluff-wise, but the Spess Pups and Black Templar still don't follow the Codex Astartes anyway... so what's up with that?

I hope the BT will receive soon a new codex which will bring them back as the supreme warriors they are supposed to be. Seriously, these guys must be the ultimate warriors.

@AGrumpyPanda uhh ok, first of all calm down, I'm a black templar player, I'm not trying to say the codex is bad, just outdated...it could use an update, and from I've heard, we're getting one

@starhawks1 Actually mate, we get Drop Pod Assault, its just not a named special rule. As for no LR redeemers, our LR's ignore lance, so f* you. Our scouts are part of Crusader squads thank you very much, we have Sword Brethren, so who needs van/stern, the characters are actually pretty badass on the table, who needs a fucking storm raven, why bother with the conversion beamer? It's useless up close, and we don't have independent scouts so forget storms. Also, we have RITES OF BATTLE. We win.

Stealers are no longer anyone's worries here mate. After all, your stealers aren't going to be happy when I Razorwing your lovely hordes into oblivion, or when terminator paladins say *oh, guess what, we're your initiative bitches.*

Stealers are scary, and they fill the role of armour killers nicely, but to be honest, they aren't as epic
