Lucienne Boyer - Quand tu seras dans mes bras, Valse-chanson (M.Monnat), Columbia 1933 (Polish pressing)

NOTE: In the slideshow are the paintings, magazine covers and masks by Władysław Teodor BENDA (born 1873 in Poznań, Poland died 1948 in Newark, New Jersey) Polish painter, illustrator and designer. Benda studied painting at the Academy of Beautiful Arts in Cracow, and in 1899 he trevelled to USA, following his aunt, who was a world famous Polish stage actress Helena Modrzejewska (aka Modjeska). She opened to the young artists the avenues to best American stages and magazines. He designed covers for dozens of issues of Life, Vanity Fair, Hearst's International, Cosmopolitan, Liberty, Redbook, Colliers, McCall's, Ladies Home Journal, Good Housekeeping, Theatre Magazine, The Shrine Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post or Vogue. Also very famous were his papier-mâché masks, he designed for New York revues and theatre performances (e.g. for the Ziegfeld Theatre).

  • To - obok Tamary Łempickiej czy Alicji Halickiej - kolejny kompletnie przez swych rodaków nieznany polski artysta. Benda jest znany w świecie i mnóstwo zrobił dla rozwoju teatralnej sztuki dekoracyjnej i ilustracji okładkowych w USA. Sami nie wiemy co mamy i nie umiemy u siebie tego cenić, co w nas doceniają inni. To bardzo smutna konstatacja i zarazem wytłumaczenie wielu naszych idiotycznych kompleksów i niewybaczalnych klęsk.

  • Thank you! His art, indeed, can be located just in the crossing point of a few styles: the belle epoque, just fading away in the 1900-10, the modernism and the approaching art deco. Also - a lot of oriental motifs, that were so popular in the early 1920s

  • Thank you for your kind comment! Don't accuse yourself for having missed Benda's name. He was Polish,but besides a handful of specialists, he remains completely unknown in his home country.

    2) Gdzie można znaleźć w Polsce giełdy od starych płytek - nie będę kolecjonował tak namiętnie jak Pan, ale kilkanaście egzemplarzy bym chętnie sobie kupił (drugi mój projekt muzyczny polega na samplingu starych, prawie zapomnianych utworów) ?

  • Panie Grzegorze! Panski kanał jest po prostu rewelacją! Jeżeli mi wolno zadawaćkilka pytań:

    1) Zna pan może kapelę, która gra muzykę z czasu międzywojennego? Jestem gitarzystą w stylu Django Reinhardt, i co prawdę cieżko mi tu znaleźć muzyków o podobnych skłonnościach (tu to znaczy Poznań)?

  • Oh, by the way, Benda's illustrations are very apposite here. Lucienne Boyer was herself a model for the artist Foujita in the early 1920s.

    Her career was a varied one: lost her father killed in action in the first days of WW1 and had to go and work in a munitions factory where she discovered her remarkable singing talent in lunch-break theatricals. Throughout her life she just threw herself 100% into everything she did. She didn't just sing the songs, she WAS the songs.

  • The thing about Lucienne Boyer is that she was "just" an amateur singer - but an amateur so superbly good that she knocked the operatically-trained professionals clean out of the ring: everything done with such passion and sincerity. The occasional slight wobbles in her voice make it all the more charming.

    She retained a following in Poland well into the 1960s, long after she'd become démodé in France. My wife's cousin interviewed her in Warsaw when she did a concert there c.1959.
