What is the problem with glacial run-off water that would preclude swimming? Is it too basic or acidic due to mineral content, or is there something else?

Nah, it's just so cold that you'd suffer hypothermia in short order! I guess if you had an insulated wetsuit you could give it a go.. :-)

Lake Louise is in Alberta, not BC.

Wow, that is odd. I saw you wearing a t-shirt and assumed the weather was rather temperate. Then again, I suppose water from a giant melted glacier would be rather cold.
