A good flintlock will fire consistently, even upside down

  • How many shots do you get before you need to resharpen the flint?

  • @GunOwnerDan I don't really wait for the flint to get dull, so I give it a few light taps with my flint hammer after about every 4 shots.

  • @GunOwnerDan Well, it varies. I like the thinner flints. They don't last as long, but they throw a lot more sparks than the thick ones. I probably get about 30 shots per flint. I pick and choose my flints to find ones I like.

  • Very impressive demonstration! It seems flintlocks are underrated just because many people don't know how to maintain them properly.

  • @SkallagrimNilsson Very true. I have found them to be very reliable when they are taken care of. I have shot in the rain without problems, and have shot in a week-long competition firing over 180 shots and having only ONE misfire.

  • @blacksmithju I do reenactment and it is a shame how badly most flintlocks perform. but mostly for want of maintenance or improper handling.

Many people ose off-the-rack 1mm touchholes, as these are common today, but my musket has a simple, drillen, nonconed touchhole of 2.3mm as the originals, and it is firing like a charm. also, I found out that much depends on the powder and actually modern powder often is less respondend to sparks than the old stuff.

  • @blacksmithju

How many shots would you say you can get from one flint before you need to replace it? Thanks.
