kata is art man. its is the artist's infinite masterpiece. to totally express the art in a systematic pattern is like watching the beauty of nature. for those who dont understand that pls seek a path to a peaceful suicide. or u can seek a real teacher and learn more than punching

Kata is to show form, speed, power and understanding of the basics. It's deceptively simple to watch, but you can work on one kata for a year before it's acceptable. To say it's worthless is only to show your ignorance.

@mousewallrat Well said. Some of this comment really must makes you smile. Saying that katas are useless is like saying that you do not need the letters in an alphabet to write a poem.Beside, katas are unwritten cultural treasures.Traditional MA will not work in real fight they say...well, karate always worked for me (and works for Lioto Machida too). Sensei Funakoshi said:'kihon is the basics, real combat is a different thing' Thanks to all these MMA evangelists for discovering warm water.

@pkhamidar2com Religion is also pretty useless. Govenment is also pretty useless. You cannot compare kata and sparring. Kata is useless for somebody who wants REAL FIGHT. In that case I will agree that kata's are not for you, BUT. They are not useless for everyone. Think about it like it is capoeira. It is a dance, but if necessary, it can deal some brutal damage. Next time, you can say that playing chess is useless

@doktormozg meh.... i can live with that. I used to do TSD but i moved away from that because i was sick of doing Katas, im now going to go into Judo. In no way is arts with lots of katas inferior to arts with less stress for katas but i just dislike them. Because the judo place im going to has no Katas but lots of focus on sparring, full contact and competitions, it seems perfect to me. Other than that, katas are pretty useless.

@SpiritMolecule1 agreed :P i dislike katas after being forced to do them for so long. Ive gained NOTHING from katas, they are boring, useless. When i sparred i learned a bazillion times more than doing katas for all that time... Sparring + full contact = win!
