true, but a bull barrel adds a lot of wieght, u wont notice it unless ur hikin long miles in the mountains, then the need for a skinnier barrel will come to mind. the bull barrel was designed for target shooting to take several hundred rounds without over heating, they began to be put on rimfires and varmit rifles because they steady the shot and help the tiny cartridge along its way
u have a bull barrel on yer .17 hmr if its twice as thick, most are bull barrels on the new rimfires, and it isnt realy a large round its just .30 cal

You don't have that many options in "barrel thickness" from .30 cal on up.... Less you were to make a custom

big recoil, i cant believe for such a large round the barrel is small in diameter. my 17hmr rifle barrel is twice as thick.
