NSCC president Dr. Joan McArthur-Blair helped students complete the first, permanent, exterior "living wall" east of Vancouver. Living walls combine the natural and built environments. They filter the air, create habitats and add vitality to a buildings design. The 7,000 plants that make up NSCCs living wall offer a variety of colours, textures, flowers and berries, providing a living piece of art that will change with the seasons.

TRANSCRIPT:
Roelof van der Merwe, student: We'd like to present you with a Japanese garden knife.

NSCC president, Dr. Joan McArthur-Blair: When the students handed me the gardening knife and I got my hands dirty planting this wall, I think, for me, it symbolizes everything that we're capable of as an institution. This project took the propagation of 10,000 plants to put up the 7,000 plus on this wall. It took research. It took Sue Sirrs and her company looking at how we might do this.

Sue Sirrs, Landscape Architect: I'm thrilled. I've got dirty hands! I'll never get these fingernails clean and I'm happy.

NSCC president, Dr. Joan McArthur-Blair: It took the incredible knowledge of our faculty member and the ways in which the horticulture students could get involved.

[JMB asks students] When Tim said to you, this is what we're going to do, what did you think about it?

Roelof van der Merwe, student: Oh, I thought, what an opportunity; let's go. Lets do this!

Tim Amos, Horticulture Instructor: I asked them for a commitment and they, they jumped at it.

Roelof van der Merwe, student: This is discovering new land. This is a frontier. This is, we are pioneers in this and to have the pictures and the experience and everything in my portfolio is just one step above everybody else.

NSCC president, Dr. Joan McArthur-Blair: We pay attention to where we're going and walk along that path of experimentation. And as a consequence, have great days like this where something truly experimental has come to fruition and we can be proud of it.
