On Aug. 27, 1955, a 252-foot-tall hydroformer exploded, hurling deadly projectiles across the refinery and into adjoining neighborhoods. Sixty-seven storage tank burned for eight days. A three-year-old child asleep in his bed died when debris crashed from the ceiling of his bedroom.

I was 4 years old at that time. My dad worked in safety in the refinery. I remember he had to help fight the fire.
