A six-year-old boy is recovering after being mauled by a pit bull on Christmas Day. Just two months ago, the Metro Council adopted a revised animal ordinance to try to prevent attacks like this one. Little Darious Clark's entire right leg has bites on it. They're visible from his foot all the way up to his inner thigh, where the pit made a 13-centimeter deep bite. He's able to hop around now, but his family says this is one Christmas Day that Darious will never forget. As Velma Guice tends to her son's wounds, she thinks back to Christmas Day. The sounds of Darious screaming out for her still linger in her mind. Just 15 feet away from her child, she was in shock and could not get to him. "We always said what we would do if something happened. I always said I'd gouge their eyes out. Baby, I was stuck. I just froze."
'Sweet Pea,' a one-year-old pregnant pooch pounced on little Darious after getting loose while her owners gave her water. Darious's older sister barely escaped the dog's wrath herself. "At first, he came at me. I didn't know what he wanted to do, so I jumped on top of a car," says Mourgann Guice. Mourgann watched as 'Sweet Pea's' owners punched the pit continuously. She was beaten with a bat until it broke, but the dog simply would not let go of the six-year-old. "It scared me to see him getting thrown like a doll. I thought he was going to die. And after he killed Darious, I thought he was going to come for me." After 10 minutes, which felt like an eternity to Guice, 'Sweet Pea' was finally knocked unconscious. "I was scared to death. And it's through the grace of God that my baby's still alive," says Velma Guice. Under the recently revised animal ordinance, 'Sweet Pea' is now considered a "dangerous dog." Animal control agents say the incident is still under investigation. The pit's owners have not been fined and the dog is currently being held in quarantine.

  • The only good pit bull is a dead pit bull.

  • Being an animal shelter volunteer I exercise and socialize pit bulls every time Im there. I have taken out familiar pits to others I have never seen before. I have never been attacked nor have they acted aggressively toward me. They are traumatized when put in the kennels and they could easily lash out at me but they dont. I show them love and I get love back, those are the facts.

  • @kwade1957 I see you're bent. If you've ever owned a pit bull you would not DARE say they don't have traits that any other breed has. Their personalities are truly one of a kind in terms of affection, gentleness and sheer love for their owner. They will stare down DEATH to protect their owner in beautiful ways that other breeds simply would not. You'll NEVER understand our ideals (pit bull lovers). I will only own pit bulls and their mixes but not for the reason you say I will. This is over...

  • @mjfromga89 You've said nothing here different from what you've said before. You remain convinced you are somehow a superior human being who can perfectly control a pit bull and accidents cannot happen to you. You believe that if people around you fear your dog, that's their problem. You are convinced you MUST have a pit bull, although you cannot show any difference between them and other less dangerous dogs. Therefore, having a scary dog is the only true reason you want one. Good luck.

  • @kwade1957 People here are only skittish around my dog because he's large and he runs and is playful but not leashed. If I had another pit bull (there are MANY here) I would not even get the reaction that maybe YOUR neighbors would give. But when I was in places like parks away from home.. yes people were afraid. A woman saw my pit bull and before even coming close to see if she was friendly she said "I don't think that dog is friendly".

  • @kwade1957 The only thing I could do for people who were afraid of my pit bull was to try and show them that they should not be, but they refused to hear me out, they thought of my dog as a monster without knowing her, they wouldn't let her get close.. they turned her away so I no longer care and I have a right to feel that way. They let the MEDIA teach them and that is not my fault. Also if you look at my current dog, you would not know he had any pit bull in him unless I told you

  • @mjfromga89 Fate may decided IF your dog bites; YOU decide what kind of dog bites. I shudder at the attitude that says you don't care if your neighbors fear your dog. I thank God my Texas neighbors are more neighborly than that!

There are many dogs that have all the same characteristics you claim to love in a pit, without the deadly potential, but it's clear you and other pit lovers don't want any dog but a pit or pit mix, so it's that fear a pit causes in others you must really be after.

  • @kwade1957 I understand your position, I'm not trying to condescend you. I'm just saying that I have NEVER had anything like this happen and will NOT because I am very careful and I take care to TRAIN my dogs properly. I love pit bulls and their energy and their sweet personalities. I have owned them in the past, currently own a mix (14 year old retriever/pittie mix) and will own them in the future. Not a single one has hurt anybody or was even aggressive enough to bite a harmless child....

  • @kwade1957 Why am I wrong for owning a dog that I can control properly and that poses no threat to anyone? Why should I feel for some randoms and their kids because THEY have fear, that is not my problem! As for the gun analogy, you hit the nail on the head. If you cannot control a gun/dog THEN you should not have one. A dog cannot go where it's owner does not let it UNLESS the owner is irresponsible. Accidents such as this one are FAR too careless for them to have owned a dog period!
