  • and also heating is necessary because water is not that volatile, so it will take long time for you to perform the experiment because you will wait for the water molecules to be in its gaseous state for you to have the so called vapor pressure. therefore heating is necessary for those who want to perform the experiment not to get BORED..

  • The ice causes the external pressure of the water vapor inside the container to drop, thus the vapor pressure needed by the water vapor inside the container to be equal with the external pressure is minimized, also remember that when external pressure and vapor pressure is equal, liquid starts to boil..and because of this relationship..water will need a little amount of vapor pressure for it to boil..these explains why water in a closed container boils with ice

  • 0:48 Pour the boiling water into your bong....

  • I learned this from Dr. Sumner Miller some years ago. The enthusiasm with which he does his experiments was always so awesome :)

  • @MikeM8891 I learned that in Science class today! :D

  • The low temperature of the ice causes the pressure in the cavity at the top the drop. This reduces the boiling point of the water causing it to boil without a heat source.

  • what boils when it has impurity's in it so by doing that are you distilling it and when the ice is added the impurity's go into the water and rapidly and violently cause the water to boil? is that how it works?

  • Depends on temperature difference and previous heating and cooling. First few times it creates micro cracks that are easily within acceptable limits, but after 5-7 times it breaks.

  • oh great,and now what????

    ???????

    ???????

  • no its porbably made of pyrex which is like some super high grade glass which is made to go from really hot to really cold quickly :)
