Inside the Chernobyl Reactor

Take a look at conditions inside the reactor where the hastily built sarcophagus (cover) over the reactor is falling apart and requires constant maintenance. Want to find out more or find out how ...

chernobyl was caused by a group of Scientists acting outside of normal operating procedures and a faulty control rod which jamed a third of the way in. The new wave of reactors Gen 3, have passive safety systems relying on gravity and no operator intervention. Working in the industry i can assure you that it is very safe and the only way that the world can fulfil it's power needs in a clean efficient & reliable way.

@thesaintsrow2player try 245,000 years, thats the half life of plutonium, and even then the radiation would have contaminated all the surroundings, like soil, animals, anything biological... So to get rid of this they would have to literaly dig out all the soil and everything, then burry it under concrete to prevent further contamination. in other words, there will not be normal life around the disaster for much longer than 1000 years. and espessialy no life at the core...

they say that that could be covered up for at least another 1000 years before they will let people move in to that area

First of all these are soviets they have technology that can withstand that amount for a couple minutes but the problem is that they have to be cleaned off after so that will decrease the chance of getting cancer :)

but that is the CORE of the reactor and it is extremely isolated encased by tons and tons of sand and lead dropped on it during the fires after the explosion. there is a significant difference between the radiation levels of core and that of the interior reactor, which allows properly equipped individuals to work in these areas however they are limited to anywhere from 40 seconds to 15 minutes of exposure depending on what area they are in the reactor.

@broc212>>> It's far more complicated than your little brain can think. A normal human can work in that enviorment about couple minutes per hour. And he still will have 90% chances of cancer, malformation etc. And even tho the reactor will be completely sealed, the radiation level in the area will only be about 5% better. So every effort is kinda useless...

Special suits, short amount of time, and the fact that the explosion happened 20 years ago... But who told you that you can die "in seconds"? =))

first of all these pics are taken by unmanned vehicles. that black glob at 0:28 is known as the "elephant's foot" its basically the solidified contents of the reactor that were turned into a radioactive lava of sorts during the fire. NO-ONE can survive or is allowed in the core. Radioactivity levels are still far far too high even for those specially equipped with suits and the core will remain "hot" or radioactive for thousands of years.
