@guineapiggyman You make a good point. But you see, we cannot know for certain whether these events are indeed exaggerations or not. We ourselves were not present. But apart from the Dead Sea Scrolls, we also have secular records that have been kept by conquering empires, etc. There is also a great deal of archaeological evidence that has been left behind -from armour to pottery to bones. We can be as certain about the events spoken of in the OT as we can of any other ancient culture.
-
@Gethsemaneful yes, but again, the old testament book took place in the years supposedly (way) prior to 150 BC, so just becauseit was written in BCE, doesnt mean its any more reliable. its still A LONG TIME AFTER THE FACT. just look at some stories that got blown out of proportion in less than 50 yrs today (ie: Roswell, Philadelphia exp., Nanking, Vietnam, etc...)

I think it's tom cruise under the mask ;)

@guineapiggyman The Old Testament though, is a different story. Carbon dating of the Red Sea Scrolls -the Old Testament or Torah- have been dated to between 150 BC and 70 BC. They're significant because they contain nearly the entire OT and that the scripts we've been using contain no major errors. There are older scripts, of course, but those are also partial records.
-
@guineapiggyman Further, the books of the Bible were usually named for the content, not the author. That's why first and second Samuel talk about Samuel's role, 1 and 2 Kings are about the kings of Israel, etc. You are partially right about the dating. For the New Testament, the earliest book we have is dated to 70AD. Jesus said to go out and tell the good news, not to write everything down. They probably started writing things down when lot's of the first followers started to die.
-
@guineapiggyman Incorrect, sorry. The Church was indeed founded by Jesus Christ. None of the people who followed Christ were gostic, they all believed him. I believe you're refering to the heresy of gnosticism which came about in the first century AD by people who didn't believe Jesus Christ and formed their own religious beliefs which were easier for them to follow. We know the Church existed because of the the first Popes of which Peter and Clement are mentioned in the Bible.
-
@Gethsemaneful uh sorry, but YOURE wrong. christianity was not founded in christs time. jesus barely had any followers back then, and they were gnostics. the founding of christianity/cath. as it is today, was started hundreds of years later. did you know that not ONE book of the bible was actually written by the person its named for? and the fact that no part of the bible can be traced back further than 150ad. this means that until the bible was written down, it was strictly word of mouth...
Thanks for posting.
Seeds of doubt have been planted.

The world is filled with delusional people. Me paps told me when i was a kid, i never believed him when i was a kid, blindly trusting that the world must be filled with willing intelligent and prospering people. I was wrong and i feel ashamed for the whole human race that we have people, movements like this and whats even worse, that instead of mendin their ways they lead other ppl to their demise.
