Yusuf Islam, better known as '70s' rocker Cat Stevens, claims his song "Foreigner Suite" is behind the band's recent hit, "Viva La Vida," reports Britain's Sun.

"There's been this argument about Coldplay stealing this melody from Joe Satriani, but, if you listen to it, it's mine!" says Stevens, 60, who now goes by his Muslim name. "It's the 'Foreigner Suite.' "
This is the third similar claim made against the band. Guitarist Satriani initiated legal action against Coldplay after claiming the group pilfered chords from his 2004 song "If I Could Fly." And last June, the New York act Creaky Boards alleged the song was close to their tune "The Songs I Didn't Write." The Sun, too, notes that Martin, 32, has previously made comments on plagiarizing.
"We're definitely good, but I don't think you can say we're that original," he also told Rolling Stone. "I regard us as being incredibly good plagiarists."

  • Rhythm and chords is not aspect of copyright in western copyright. It is only melody and lyrics. Hence, this analysis is interesting, but says nothing about any copyright infringement. :-)

  • IT doesnt matter, Coldplay will ALWAYS be the best band.....

  • copycat! see what i did there..?

  • i don't know... :)

  • @DeathbySunburn - It sucks, and is ironic, but unfortunately this part is true - MANY so called "artists" have made this evident by doing just that... I think they are scum - and I am even against "sampling" - to me, it is stealing...

  • @frequencyking - Well, word has it that Satriani won the lawsuit, and donated ALL of it to charity... Doesn't sound like a grab to me...

  • in france we have for example alizee's "j'en ai marre" which is on a the same chord progression

if we see in in major scale , this is 4 5 1 6

which is basically the 2 5 1 ( 4 and 5 are sub dominant chords; the 6 and 1 are in the same function too)

the majority of the songs are 2 5 1 's over and over

  • now the question is:

    Did Satriani copy Cat Stevens?

  • Joe thinks his song sounds like Viva, Cat thinks his song sounds like Viva, everyone is on Chris Martins nuts haha

  • coldplay evened copied off pokemon
