Look carefully - the black ember's a lot closer to the camera than the engine. Over the next few seconds of the episode (not shown here) there are a few more examples whizzing about. They look like bits of burnt paper or leaves, blowing around in the wind. More likely they are a CGI, non-wildfire starting alternative to bits of burnt paper or leaves.
...Not to mention the guy that just got blown into the turbine.

its the cloverfield monster

ITS JESUS!!!
-
its was a guy that got sucked into the engine and that made it explode
-
its the smoke its not a error why else would something fly above the engine right wen it explodes has any one that of that u retards

ITS SUPERMAN!
-
that guy that got sucked inside got wrecked ahaha

I think very simple. The producers put that because they dont know yet what is the black smoke. Later, is just a "CGI malfunction"

it looks like debri that was floating, like something as light as paper, then was blown back by the blast. the flames start coming out of the engine before the black thing even gets close to it
Im sorry to say but, thats a CGI error....

The Lost producers said it was simply a CG malfunction.
