The history of well dressing is not clear. Tissington survived the plague of 1348 and then it's wells did not dry up during the drought of 1615 and so this is remembered and thanks given. In almost every year since then the wells have been decorated with flowers painstakingly prepared on clay boards for attaching to the wells on Ascension Day, There is a thanksgiving service at the church followed by the blessing of each well in turn
