World War II produced some of the most exotic and fearsome prop-driven fighter planes ever to soar across enemy skies. The German Luftwaffe's number one plane at the beginning of the war (and for a good long time afterward) was the legendary Messerschmidt Me 109, an all-metal, closed cockpit fighter plane designed to fill many tasks, including night and day air-to-air fighting, ground attack, bomber escort, and reconnaisance. Three top German aces scored their kills in the Me 109 -- Erich Hartmann with 352, Gerhard Barkham with 301, and Günther Rall with 275 -- though many of the kills came on the Eastern front against older slower Soviet planes. At least one ace, however, Hans-Joachim Marseille, shot down 158 British and American planes during the African campaign. But the Me 109 also had problems. The wheels were too close together, making take-offs and landings difficult on the largely grass fields used to keep the planes close to the front. The FW 190, which came along later, made up for this wide widely spaced wheels. Music is a vocalized rendition of the German national anthem, followed by "Altpreussischer Parademarsch."
