In this 175th year of the Great Western Railway, the West Somerset Railway decided to hold their 'Spring Steam Gala' with the theme of the 'Standard' design locomotives that ran on the Western Region of British Railways in the 1950s and 60s.
The first ever 'Standard', 70000 'Britannia', was outshopped in January 1951, and it was hoped that this locomotive's overhaul would be completed in time for the event but sadly this wasn't to be, and the last of the 999 locomotives was built at Swindon in March 1960, number 92220 'Evening Star', who is currently a static display at the STEAM museum, but the gala did feature two Swindon built 9Fs, the famous works of the Great Western Railway in the town which it built. Other Standard designs to feature was a member from the only surviving standard tank design, the 4MT 2-6-4Ts, a 2MT 2-6-0 some of who's classmates were found working on exGWR routes and the 8P 4-6-2 71000 'Duke of Gloucester' who had trials on the Western Region trying to improve some faults. The WSR had hoped for more of the eight different surviving standard designs but sadly unavailability meant only five from four classes could attend meaning four of the homebased fleet had to be used, a GWR 'King' (in her BR form), a SR 'West Country' in her BR rebuilt condition and two prairie tanks in BR liveries (including one built in BR days).
The full line up was -
| BR(W) 2-6-2T 5101 'Large Prairie' Class number 4160
| GWR 2-6-2T 4575 'Small Prairie' Class number 5553
| GWR 4-6-0 60xx 'King' Class number 6024 'King Edward I'
| SR 4-6-2 'West Country' Class number 34046 'Braunton'
| BR 4-6-2 Standard Class 8 (8P) number 71000 'Duke of Gloucester'
| BR 2-6-0 Standard Class 2 (2MT) 'Mickey Mouse' number 78019
| BR 2-6-4T Standard Class 4 (4MT) number 80104
| BR 2-10-0 Standard Class 9 (9F) number 92203 'Black Prince'
| BR 2-10-0 Standard Class 9 (9F) number 92212
| Peckett 0-4-0ST number 1788 'Kilmersdon'
Please note that 5553, 6024 or 'Kilmersdon' do not feature in this video, but they can be found on other videos of mine.
With thanks to GJDobbzy, jakeyboygen and theonlyadsrulz.
Plan GJDobbzy and I carried out -
0800 Bishops Lydeard-Minehead with 92212 (92203 banked to Crowcombe)
1200 Minehead-Williton with 4160
1350 Williton-Watchet with 80104
1459 Watchet-Minehead with 92212
1600 Minehead-Bishops Lydeard with 6024
A hand powered turntable for standard gauge? Wow! Here in America most standard gauge turntables are motorized and 9f's are small (about the size of an average narrow gauge 2-8-2 in America, and those are tiny compared to most of the standard gauge stuff here).

@atsf3415dbr yeah the way its engineered means that two men can push around a locomotive, quiet incredible really as I don't think most people know a typical british steam loco weighs around 70 tons - before you add a loaded tender!
