  • I think it was John Carrol Case who said that his vibrato being as wide as a tone that he had to trill on minor thirds!

  • @1401JSC I can see the logic, quoting someone who was trained and taught in the Anglican style of singing...however, this is Brahms. Rest assured, when I'm singing Gibbons, I can flatten it out quite easily.

  • @inrharmony

was it Brahms who said "the problem with Lieder is the singer" ?

    :)

  • funny....Brahms never told me that!!!

  • Beautifully sung, much the best version of this great lied by a baritone that I've heard in a long time. I think it is most effective in this key, rather than the deeper one in which basses tend to sing it.

  • Thank you so much....it was a joy to sing these wonderful pieces. Glad you enjoyed!!

  • Well, I'd assumed this was the original key and that Kipnis, for example, had to transcend the songs downward. But I'm not a Brahms scholar, so I don't know which keys he preferred. If you have some evidence suggesting that Brahms wanted other keys, present it, by all means! As far as I'm concerned, we are here to learn from each other, not to score debating points:) --

  • you mean in this key as opposed to the key that brahms wanted it to be sung in? ;)

  • Thank you very much!!!

  • Great voice... Havent heard a voice like this for a long time!Very nice!
