If you take the terms seriously, then this isn't jazz rock at all. This is soul jazz. Jazz rock was rock bands that incorporated jazz elements like form, arrangement, and instrumentation into their product. This is just a jazz combo playing a tune with a back beat, that hardly makes it a form of rock. Just like Pink Floyd using a saxophone doesn't make it jazz.

Growing up as a teenager studying jazz, my guitar teacher tossed the book Straight Life at me & said "read this".
It scared the hell out of me in terms of what drugs can do to a person.
But he was certainly a great alto player. Check out Art Pepper Live at the Village Vanguard, which were released in his later years. RIP, Art.
