Short video of a Cicada that I found on the side of my house, on the screened door. Also some pictures and a little bit of info. about their life cycle etc.

These guys are out every summer! Buzzing their noises! There must be ALOT of cicadas still under ground if they can continue coming out every summer. 17 years is a very long time for one generation to emerge! Some species take less time.

Most Cicadas aren't classified as an individual species.

Cicadas are insects, best known for the sound made by the males of the species. The males make this sound by flexing their tymbals, which are drum-like organs found on their abdomens.

Cicadas belong to the order Hemiptera, suborder Homoptera and family Cicadidae. Leafhoppers, spittle bugs and jumping plant lice are close relatives of the cicada. Hemiptera are different from other insects in that both the nymph and adult forms have a beak, which they use to suck fluids called xylem from plants. This is how they both eat and drink.

The origin of the word cicada isnt 100% clear however it appears to be based on the Latin word for cicada. This makes sense as there were certainly plenty of cicadas in the days of Rome. Cicadas are called semi in Japan, cigale in France, cigarra in Spain.

Different Varieties

There are over 100 species of cicada in North America, and over 2000 species around the world. Cicadas exist on every continent but Antarctica.

The largest cicada species of cicada is the Pomponia imperatoria, which is native to Malaysia.

According to the University of Florida Book of Insect Records, the Tibicen walkeri are the loudest cicadas, and can achieve 108.9 decibels.

In North America there are two main types of cicadas: periodical (which belong to the genus Magicicada) and annual. The Tibicen is the most common genus of annual cicada in North America.

  • they are small enough for an adult f. pardalis with the wings removed.

i feed one to my 11 month old 10 hours after it emerged as an adult so it wasnt fully hardened. after 2 bites the exo skeleton cracked and 10 bites later he downed it with very little problem.

  • Julius- I worry much more about their legs. They're extremely hard and thick. sharp too, which could lead to a cut, which could lead to a mouth infection.

You're lucky to have found one prior to being an adult! If it was in time (during the morning) I probably would have fed the fresh adult off. They're so soft when freshly molted!

Speaking of sharp legs, even the larger dubia, I clip their legs off.

My choice is simply different than yours when it comes to crunchy critters.

  • BEST VIDEO ON THIS TOPPIC!!!

  • Omg I cannot even begin to tell you how scared I am of cicadas! I nearly broke my foot this morning going to my car bc I was trying to run past one, then almost stepped on another after hearing both of them, and in doing that ran even more and almost tripped over my own 2 feet. I think it is the sound they make, and 1 has hit me in my hand before, and it hurt bc the shell was so hard. I really wish I could get over my phobia.

  • You shouldn't have changed the music it was great. Now you can't even hear the dame Cicada. May I ask why you removed the other music ??

  • At the end of the video it says subscribe. How do I do that and also I would love to see your camlions, I really would.
