Mark Shepherd, Director of Music at Charterhouse School in Surrey, UK, performs improvisations by the long-time Titulaire at Notre Dame de Paris, recorded in 1963 & transcribed by Jeanne Joulain. I didn't realize until I was in the middle of editing these that the "Neuf" improvisations were indeed "Sept." Don't know where the other 2 went ;-).

The marvelous 25-rank tracker instrument was built by the Schudi Organ Company of Texas, & installed in the Shrine's Crypt in 1987.

Mark's concert was recorded in July of 2009, as part of a summer-long tribute to Pierre Cochereau. I suppose you could also say that the performance is now a tribute to Mme. Joulain, who died only 5 weeks ago, at the age of 90. She & Cochereau were both students of Marcel Dupré, & both had long & illustrious careers as both concert & church organists.

  • Mr. Shudi is still at work in The DFW area..

  • Genius is the word that comes to mind when thinking about Cochereau and Joilain. Also to Schudi and Shepherd and not least to your good self in sharing this treat with the rest of the YT organ devotees.

  • Sorry it took so long. I've been trying to edit the recording for several months -- but life kept getting in the way ;-)
