The operation began in the early hours of December 8, 1992, when elements of the 8th Psychological Operations Battalion (Airborne) attached to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) conducted leaflet drops over the capital city of Mogadishu. Early on December 9, the MEU performed an amphibious assault into the city of Mogadishu.

The MEUSOC's ground combat element, Battalion Landing Team (BLT) 2/9, performed simultaneous raids on the Port of Mogadishu and Mogadishu International Airport, establishing a foothold for additional incoming troops. Echo and Golf Company assaulted the airport by helicopter and Amphibious Assault Vehicles, while Fox Company secured the port with an economy of force rubber boat raid. Fox Company's raid on the port was the first large scale Combat Rubber Raid Craft (CRRC) raid since World War II. Elements of BLT 2/9 went on to secure the airport in Baidoa, and the port city of Kismayo.

  • Thanks for posting this video. I landed at this airport with my camera (TV news) a few days after the Marines stormed the shore. Slept on the tarmac on wheat pallets for a few nights. I'll try and upload some of my footage of the airport.

  • Great...I have more I will upload too. Thanks for the interest...

God bless your father and your family.

If our country is great, this is due to our brave soldiers.

    Bye.

  • My father served.. and as a 12 year old watching this.. Was the proudest moment of my life. Here we where trying to use our power, not for territory, not for defense, but so that someone a world away would be able to go to lay down and not list ion to their kids dyeing of starvation. We a banded these people, and we OWE them for that.

  • BLT 2-9, 15th MEU =, HMLA-267 HMM-164 HMH-465 MALS-39, MALS-16 Semper Fi fellas. I was there as a Corporal embarked on the U.S.S. Tripoli LPH-10. Anchored with no liberty for 60+ days at sea as I recall. Special shout-out to all those who served. I will never forget the look on the villagers faces when we were cutting the treeline at 110 knots. Oh yeah..special thanks to the Air Force for bringing the hot chow! Well, if nothing else, at least we got to visit Thailand and Singapore right? haha!

  • Perfect assault!!
