Union Grove Fiddlers Convention, NC, Easter 1971. Robert meets Jerry Beal of the Farkleberry Farm Steam Dulcimerworks and Music Emporium. Learns there is another dulcimer player at the festival. Seeks out and finds Albert d'Ossché.
Wow....a great memory! I went to that 52nd Annual Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Union Grove. Drove down from Michigan with my sister whos college friend was from nearbye & we stayed at his parents house.Three days of rain and mud everywhere and people camping in it taboot! But under the huge circus tents was the sweetest music I'd ever heard.....I was 17yrs old and quite the pot smokin hippie...hahaha. I bought a t-shirt and my sister bought a dulcimer and has it still to this day!!!
I went in '71 and '72 and had a blast. It was NC's Woodstock, lots of extracurricular activities :) I lived close by, so it was a must do, but was a big deal with the locals. They strongly objected to the "hippies", drugs, and free sex, which was ultimaltely what ended the Convention. I graduated high school in'72, left for college and never attended again. Now we have Merlefest, which is nothing like the old Convention as far as the crowd goes, but they do have some awesome performances.
Good old Union Gove. I went there from '73 until they shut it down (~'76?). It was fun until it became a zoo. Lot's of good music and memories from there.
