PBO reader Alec Macpherson has developed an old idea to allow a man overboard to actively save himself at sea. HE writes: 'If a person falls overboard, the only action they can take is to grab the towrope and give it a tug. This action therefore needs to allow them to return safely aboard, without assistance from anyone else, so the tug on the towrope must activate things in the cockpit to make self-rescue possible. This is just as relevant to small crews on a watch system as it is to the single-handed sailor. The aim is to be prepared to help yourself to safety without relying on anyone else.'
