Tony Williams, through listening to his playing, taught me what time is. When I was young, I thought that time was simply playing steady. But as I went deeper and deeper into tony's playing, the steady tempo gave way into feel and expression. Sure, the tempo remained steady, as it needs to, but the expression and elasticity became what the time was all about. I realized that time is presence and presence has a certain "fat" or "weight" about it. It's like an anchor. Thanks Tony for teaching me.
