I can offer a solution here: chop the UK into pieces, have England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man, and all of those other competitors in the Commonwealth Games enter separately.

Then, enter Adele as the singer.

Jade Ewen was an excellent singer, but the package included Andrew Lloyd Weber in a very prominent position (on stage, but also his popularity abroad, and he spent a lot of time saying who he was). Personally, I think that the BBC just doesn't have the skills (or the budget) to get a winner - I think they promote via radio abroad (when ESC is so visual?), and they take an existing 'track that could be suitable' - wrong approach, it should be written for the contest.

You are right about all of this. Azerbaijan has a gentle hill to climb to win. The UK has the North face of the Eiger. The UK's entry should be something that you could imagine hearing in the charts, but essentially it is about something that sticks out a mile in the crowd - Lord preserve us from OK songs that focus heavily on the staging (Azerbaijan) or worst of all a song that is a checklist of previous winners (Denmark & Fairytale - barefoot woman- check, focus on acoustic instruments- check)
