I hear ya man, but what are ya gonna do? You could add solar power, but there is a reason you don't see lots of people doing it, because it doesn't pay for itself and is very expensive. Dude, a couple grand won't even get close to getting ya off the grid. A couple grand might power a little tv and 1 CFL for a few hours a day, ha. You got big energy bills, you need to address more rationally, and figure out how to conserve energy in your home.

in the UK its called 'standing charge' you pay even if you DONT use any gas or electric. Prices only ever go up - its the same everywhere.
