The African-American Contralto singer, Marian Anderson (1897.2.27 ~ 1993.4.8) sings one of her signature song, "Deep River", for Victor in 1924. This is the very first recording she have ever made. It is an astonishing, and powerful rendition, and yet it is very surprising that these spiritual songs were not part of her childhood but she had to learn them as an adult.
Her later versions with piano accompaniment is much more well-known, but this version shows her Soprano-like quality much more than her later recordings, when her voice started to get darker and deeper, much more like you would expect from a "contralto".

Why do you have a copyright disclaimer, shouldn't these already be in public domain?

Your observations about the changes in her voice are right on. Quite an amazing difference which cannot be explained solely by the difference between acoustic and electrical recording.

I came across this recording by chance. What a fortunate discovery! And what a wonderful voice. Thank you very much for uploading, I will now spend (too) much time seeking her other recordings on youtube. And thank you for all your other postings.
