I've known Mark Balke, a.k.a. Mel Ford, since high school. Never thought of him as pretentious. In fact, I've always considered Mel a modest person. Considerng his guitar playing talent, he probably could've had a hugely successful career as a rock muscian. But Mel loves the blues and you have to give him credit for sticking with it all these years. I think "Mel Ford" was a nickname given to him by Paul Black when they played together in the Flip Kings. When in Madtown see the WAMF blues band.

Great Great Madison Blues Band. Whether you like the blues or not, they are great to see. Westside Andy is the best harp player around, Mel Ford is one of the best blues players vocally and on guitar, Voegeli writes great lyrics to his songs and is the best organ-piano player you'll see, and Steve on drum does a great rendition of Ray Charles' Mess Around. They rock, swing, get sultry and can make anyone that goes to see them say WOW.
