Here is the sound that gave these insects, Gromphadorhina portentosa, their common name - Hissing Cockroaches, or Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches.
This is the insect that Bug Clubbers may have on loan or, if they bring me written permission, they may have forever as a pet! These insects do not fly, bite or run real fast. While I only give away males to my students (unless asked for a pair) they are not easy to breed, and if they do have a brood it would only be around 20. Do not confuse these in any way with the cockroach species who have found a niche in human habitations and are a pest!!!! The HIsser is native to humid forest floor leaf litter...and their small young dry up and die in a house.
