Damascus Centre is a shopping center on Main Street and Woodfield Road in beautiful downtown Damascus, Maryland.
What makes this video exclusive?
This video was shot last summer which means you are witnessing a bit of Damascus history: notice the original Safeway sign is lit on the old Safeway grocery store. The store was still operating at that time. Once it closed, as you can see in other videos on the Robert Dyer Channel, the building was stripped of all signage.
Today's Damascus Centre has a new, upscale Safeway grocery store, and smaller shops including Everything Equestrian, Ledo's Pizza, Damascus Dental and other medical offices, Long & Foster and Beall Florist. It is great example of how to redevelop a shopping center the right way. Many developers in the county are building vacant luxury apartments over first floor retail, and switching to garage parking.
Damascus Centre, like Little Falls Mall on Sangamore Road in Bethesda, has retained plenty of free, surface parking for the convenience of patrons. It has renovated and updated the shopping center without exceeding a 2-story height.
Damascus Centre and Little Falls offer the superior model for renovating and redeveloping many similar sites across the county, in contrast to the outsize high-density concept being rammed through by some developers, and their buddies on the County Council and Planning Board.
Damascus Centre is owned by Hekemian & Co., Inc.
