Either side of the closed gates you'll see lots of rickshaws and hear hundreds of horns beeping!...

Why close the gates so long before the train actually arrives?

Because of IDIOT BUS, CAR and TRUCK DRIVERS who would get themselves blocked on the level crossing by traffic in front of them.
