50th Celebration of FAKEHOOD and 116 YEARS OF ILLEGAL OCCUPATION....

Lawmakers Celebrate Statehood; Group Protests
Native Hawaiian Groups Say Government Pretended Hawaii's Statehood

HONOLULU - There was a major event at the state Capitol Wednesday marking the 50th anniversary of Hawaii becoming a state, but it was not a day to celebrate for everyone.

Music and celebration at the state Capitol marked the anniversary of the Hawaiian Admissions Act. It was 50 years ago on Wednesday that President Dwight Eisenhower signed the bill allowing Hawaii to become a state.

At a joint session of the Legislature, former governors were acknowledged and House and Senate members from 1959 were honored. Not everyone is celebrating the anniversary. Outside the House chamber, Native Hawaiian groups protested.

"The state of Hawaii is not a state, and although it has pretended to be for 50 years it is not a state because there was never any lawful turnover from the Hawaiian Kingdom," protestor Leon Siu said.

Inside the chambers, leaders spoke of the advantages of being part of the United States of America.

"Being a state also means we have opportunity. We are a part of a nation where you are your own person no matter who your parents are or where they came from," House Speaker Calvin Say said.

There will be more events and observances leading up to Aug. 21, the date Hawaii actually became a state.

  • i refuse to join the so called 99ers, and they are using occupy in hawaii. SO HEWA. the name may go for everywhere else ka pae aina hawaii nei is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT. for a bunch of recently arrived transplants to stand around and whine about being "enslaved", and "taking back their freedoms" is akin to the poineers following the "trail of tears", and protesting all the hardships they have to go through. Completely Hewa.

  • @yogi4itij "there could not have been without the concurrance of both parties"....so your even going to recognize the Hawaiian gov voting to become a state. oh wait, that would be a lapse in logic.

  • @nogrey If Hawai'i is occupied, then the islands are still legally independent, which would mean all previous treaties with other sovereign states are still binding in law. The Hawaiian islands acquired neutrality in 1854. The provisions of neutrality were set in multiple treaties with powerful nations, including the US. Race has nothing to do with anything. The Hawaiian Kingdom existed as a multi-racial country b4 the US occupation. Most if not all countries today are multi racial.

  • @noliesundead sovereignty is transferred from one country to another through cession, which is done through treaty. The US passed the Newlands Res., which declared there had been a cession between Hawai'i and the US, but there could not have been without the concurrance of both parties. The Newlands Res. is a internal law of the U.S., limited to American jurisdiction. There is not treaty of cession. Having a wedding ceremony doesn't make the marriage legal, there's still a legal process.

  • Less than 10% of the population of Hawaii is Native. If the land were to be given back (and please don't read anything into this, I love Hawaii and it's peoples, all of them) how would they defend themselves? Reality would dictate that they would require an ally. Who would you pick? My point is, it's the 21st Century. No one get's to be "left alone" I wish it weren't so but it is. Look at the independent tribes in South America that are being driven off their lands on a daily basis.

  • what a bunch of delusional losers who can't stop living in the pass. I guess that ceremony where Hawaii officially surrender their sovereignty never happened

  • I am Native Hawaiian of a chiefly line, but errors occurred in the Kalakaua dyanasty that sealed the Kingdom's fate. Both Kalakaua and Liliu were extravogant in their spending and they were incompetent as rulers. Strong willed, stubborn and impulsive. This lead to concerns by the Hawaiian community. Her attempt to initiate a revised constitution that would give her more power was of concern, since the dynasty was already impetuous. Liliu's signing of abdication concluded the revolution. Pau

  • Free Hawaii

  • Great video! Give the Islands back to the people who were there first. Free Hawai'i

  • welcome to the club..the United States never had land it was all stolen and the people were almost wiped out..my grandmother is from the Cherokee tribe and looked what happened.. Hawaii is a state just like any other state land and culture that was taken and destroyed.
