Here are two blackhawk helicopters that had landed on a street at the Chicago Air show. The planes off in the distance doing the fly by are an F15, F22, and P51 Mustang. The three jets in formation were lining up to do their flyover. 8-18-07
in its time speed and agility was the game. just as in our parents time the F-16 was the name of the game and so far now in our time you're right the F-22 Raptor is the name of the game
lolz that woulda been awesome to see and my favorite thing about those WW2 Warbirds... is the sound. The deep ground shaking rumble of the bombers and the ear piercing scream of the fighters. i was in a B-17 once in flight incredible memory
yeah... they tried the American engine the Allison engines (twin Allison in the P-38 Lightning) and with the American engine the results of its performance was below average but with that English one, they had one of the best fighters of its time along with the Me 109's which my German grandfather Opa flew and the Spitfire which my Scottish Grandfather flew.
All of you are correct, never seen that in a YouTube thread, the P-51D, I believe, was the one that escorted our bombers because they had the English engine, Rolls-Royce, and the detachable fuel canister.
yeah, the P-51's saved America's ass up in the skys. with speeds up to 400+ (give or take some depending on the model) and a larger radius of travel , these babies could escort our B17 and B24s to Germany and back. The original escort plane was the P-47 Thunderbolt, it couldn't fly past the boarder of Germany or they would run out of fuel.
Yeah, the P-51 usaully tops out at just over 400mph which just so happens to be the cruising speed of most fighter. But the F-22's cruising speed is about Mach 1.7 or 900+ mph offficialy! So the Raptor in this case was "slow". Speed is the Raptor's game!

There's a good photo taken of an F16 and P51 flying in formation but the F16 is flying at high AoA to allow the P51 to keep pace.
