Two hour commutes, long work days, and brief meals followed by too little sleep. This was unfortunately the life of Scott and Alex Mueller who simply weren't enjoying their city lives. Fed up with the lack of comfort that "modern comforts" were offering, the two decided to purchase 44 acres of land north of Spokane, Washington to build Moosicorn Ranch, "an experiment in sustainable living."
The Muellers' goal is to not leave the grid or go back to settler days, but rather to just live as two modern social people who felt a need to reconnect with nature and other things that sustain us like food and culture. Technology is a top priority at Moosicorn. The Muellers admit they had a satellite Internet connection before they had indoor plumbing.
They're far from experts at this project, as they made many call outs to Twitter for advice as they were building their home from scratch. When they're done they're hoping to produce 50 percent of their own food and 80 percent of their own power. After their home is finished they plan on building cottages so others can join them. Read about their journey on their blog and watch David Spark's interview with them at the Gnomedex conference in Seattle.
Scott and Alex are an inspiration to many. It's always a pleasure to see them share what they're doing. I consider myself fortunate to have met them both and I can say, without hesitation, that they are two of the most engaging and sincere people one could hope to run across. I wish them all the best in everything they put together at Moosicorn Ranch.
