Bird Flu Outbreak in Xinjiang Province

Moving on to China, where more cases of bird flu have been reported in northwestern Xinjiang Province. More than 13,000 domestic birds have been culled in an effort to contain the deadly virus.

STORY:
A source from Moyu County in Xinjiang Province, China has revealed several geese were found dead at a local goose-raising farm. An investigation revealed that the geese were carriers of the H5N1 bird flu virus.

They have set up various roadblocks and checkpoints to prevent people and vehicles from entering the area. The people working on the farm are also being isolated.

An area of about five kilometers from the farm has been blocked.

No information has been released about the outbreak of the disease.

Ducks and waterfowl have a natural resistance to the bird flu virus. But it can be spread through their feces.

Since December eight humans have been infected with five of them passing away.

One of those fatalities was in the city of Urumqi in Xinjiang Province.

The World Health Organization is concerned there will be more outbreaks of bird flu in other parts of China.

Hong Kong University epidemic experts warn that an outbreak of the H5N1 among humans could bring a very high mortality rate.
