"Bottle bills" (refundable deposits on beverage containers) are not simply a proven way to boost recycling and reduce litter. They also create green jobs, boost manufacturing, launch small businesses, enhance tourism, conserve energy, reduce spending on landfills and even generate funds for nonprofits. In this amateur video, produced by volunteers in support of Tennessee's proposed 5-cent deposit legislation (nicknamed POP, for Pride of Place), real people from across Tennessee and the U.S. share their enthusiasm for container deposits, recount first-hand experiences, discuss the significant economic impacts and clear up some of the common myths and misperceptions. As deposit programs grow throughout the world, as more and more U.S. states expand their existing programs, and as more and more non-deposit states join Tennessee in trying to enact their own, this footage will help show why bottle bills are more popular (and more important) than ever.
