And laminated sides (or double sides as they're called here have been said and are still said by many VERY influential luthiers to be very instrumental in volume production and projection. Whether or not that's because of pressure being put on the top as a result of that build process I don't know. I can certainly say that I tend to find Friederich type models to be a tad louder than the Hauser or often Ramirez/Fleta type guitars. Having said that the Ramirez/Fleta types are oft a tad warmer.
I have to say, I respectfully disagree with LFWOL. While I wouldn't say that volume is SOLEY determined by species but it can certainly can ABSOLUTLEY be a product of species. Density is a product of species and density has a direct effect on resonance and vibration levels. (That would be volume.) Certainly construction has ALOT to do with it as well. But I really think it seems dismissive to say that species isn't a determinative factor.
...that's a decent explanation of spruce vs. cedar. Also, much depends on the build. Heavier/stronger cedar tops do tend to be warm, but thinner cedar tops get a certain woody hollow 'thwak' to them. Heavier/thicker spruce tends to create a softer but tonally intense & mature... almost piano-like midrange whereas thinner spruce can be loud, but with a lean edgy sound. Wood species/quality, bracing type, craftsmanship, instrument age & finish also obviously have an impact on the final sound.
I was non-plussed by the interviewer's contributions. It's always hard to know how much to dumb down the information presented but I think it's fair to say people curious about a Fleta know what fan braces are. This isn't InexpertVillage. I felt that a little more time spent during the taping (ie. more than one take) would've made a big difference. The host could've refined his approach quite a bit. Instead it feels rushed and clumsy. Pity.
I can't believe what I'm hearing! Everywhere I read about guitars, spruce is the louder, more focused sound with more separation and clarity. Cedar the warmer, more intimate round sound. What drugs are these guys on?
