The recent "education reformers" want us to believe that if we simply apply free market principles to education it will magically fix all that is wrong. The recent stock market crash disproves this theory. The teacher accountability movement is driven by politicians scapegoating and venture capitalists desire for a vast new market. Union busting and privatization will only serve to widen the gap between rich and poor. The problems with our young people are the same problems with our society at large. They want performance based assessment but never get into the actual curriculum this assessment will be based on. If they really care about education they should teach and gain an appreciation for the devilish details.
While I am happy to hold myself to a higher standard than modern politicians and Wall Street I don't want them defining the standards.
Get real about helping our young people . . . they deserve it.
