I checked the article that you pointed to just to make sure, and, well, there's nothing there about the interaction of two objects of the same density.
Closest to that would be oil drops on water. But that is a different story.
There's no reason surface tension would work with no difference in pressure.
So, the difference is actually there. The air between the two masses of water is what makes it. Which he says. So, not exactly wrong. He's just not using the terms.

I'll admit to not being a scientist, and, well, possibly being wrong, but.
Sure, surface tension does have a role in all this, and the guy probably should have mentioned it in context of the force that makes the drops form.
But as far as I understand the video, the matter in question here is not the forming of a spherical orb of water, but the fact that it doesn't immediately connect with the bigger body as a whole and hops numerous times.
